Web Design, Development & SEO

Design and development decisions determine whether a site can rank at all. Beautiful sites built without SEO in mind, especially heavy page-builder or JavaScript builds, often arrive with no indexable text, slow pages and broken structure. This guide covers what designers and developers need to get right, and how to choose a platform.

SEO requirements for any new website

  • Server-rendered or pre-rendered HTML so content is visible without JavaScript
  • Clean, crawlable URL structure and internal linking
  • Fast loading: optimised images, minimal scripts, caching, CDN
  • Responsive layout with RTL support for Arabic
  • Semantic HTML: one H1, proper headings, lists, tables
  • Editable titles, meta descriptions, canonical tags and schema
  • XML sitemap and robots.txt
  • Redirect plan if replacing an existing site

Choosing a platform

PlatformBest forSEO notes
WordPressMost business sites and blogsExcellent with a light theme and Rank Math/Yoast; avoid plugin bloat
Shopify / Salla / ZidE-commerceGood; watch duplicate URLs and app scripts
WebflowDesign-led marketing sitesStrong SEO control; plan CMS structure
Wix / SquarespaceSmall simple sitesAdequate; limited at scale
Custom React/Vue/AngularWeb appsNeeds SSR or pre-rendering for SEO
Magento / enterprise CMSLarge catalogues and organisationsCapable; needs expert configuration

JavaScript and SEO

Google can render JavaScript but does it later and imperfectly. Content and links that only exist after client-side rendering may be missed. Use server-side rendering, static generation or hybrid rendering for anything that must rank.

Page builders

Elementor, Divi and similar tools are convenient but add markup and scripts. They can rank fine if kept lean; heavy builds with sliders, animations and dozens of add-ons usually fail Core Web Vitals. Prefer native blocks or a light builder for key templates.

Redesigns and migrations

Most ranking disasters happen at relaunch: changed URLs without redirects, lost content, noindex left on, slower templates. Plan the SEO migration before design starts. See technical SEO services.

Working with developers

Give developers a specification: templates, URL rules, metadata fields, schema, performance budgets and a redirect map. Test on staging with Search Console’s URL inspection before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Does website design affect SEO?

Yes, through speed, structure, crawlability and user experience.

Is a single-page website bad for SEO?

It limits you to ranking for one topic; multi-page structure is better for most businesses.

Which is better for SEO, WordPress or Wix?

WordPress offers more control and scales better; Wix is fine for small sites.

Do iframes hurt SEO?

Content inside iframes is not credited to your page; avoid them for important content.
