What Are Backlinks? Types, Importance & Examples

A backlink is a link from one website to another. Search engines treat backlinks as endorsements: the more relevant and trustworthy the sites linking to you, the more authority your site is judged to have. This guide explains what backlinks are, the types, why they matter, what makes one valuable, and how they fit into SEO for Saudi businesses.

Backlink definition

A backlink (also called an inbound link or incoming link) is a hyperlink on an external website that points to a page on your site. If a Saudi news site writes about your company and links to your homepage, that is a backlink. The site giving the link is the referring domain.

Why backlinks matter for SEO

Google’s original insight was that links act as votes. A page with many links from reputable pages is probably important. Links remain among the strongest ranking signals, especially for competitive commercial searches. They also bring referral traffic and brand exposure directly.

Do-follow vs nofollow

A standard link passes authority (“do-follow”). Links with rel=”nofollow”, rel=”sponsored” or rel=”ugc” tell Google not to pass authority, or to treat the link as paid or user-generated. Nofollow links still bring traffic and can contribute to a natural profile.

What makes a backlink valuable

  • Relevance: the linking site and page are about your topic or region
  • Authority: the linking site has real traffic and links of its own
  • Placement: in the main content, not footer or sidebar
  • Anchor text: descriptive and natural, not always exact-match
  • Uniqueness: the first link from a domain counts far more than the tenth
  • Traffic: sites with real readers pass more than dormant ones

Internal vs external links

Internal links connect pages on your own site and distribute authority; external (outbound) links point from your site to others. Backlinks are external links pointing in. All three matter.

Backlinks for Saudi websites

Most Saudi sites have few quality links, and very few Arabic links. That makes a handful of placements on Saudi and Gulf publications unusually powerful. See link building services and how to get backlinks.

How to check your backlinks

Google Search Console (Links report), Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free), Semrush, Moz and Majestic. See backlink checker tools.

Frequently asked questions

How many backlinks do I need?

Enough relevant, quality links to match or exceed the sites ranking for your target terms. Quality over quantity.

Are backlinks still important in 2026?

Yes. Google has reduced their weight for some queries, but they remain a top signal for competitive terms.

Do social media links count?

Most are nofollow; they help indirectly through exposure.

Can bad backlinks hurt my site?

Spammy links can; Google ignores most, and you can disavow obvious attacks.

What is a backlink in Arabic?

باك لينك or رابط خلفي. See our Arabic backlink service.
